    The Great Falls Red Devils run onto the field Friday at Oliver C. Dawson at S.C. State University in Orangeburg, ready to challenge for the Class A Division II state championship.

  • WEB UPDATE: G.F. War Memorial rental to increase

    A Chester County committee has already met and recommended an increased rental rate for the Great Falls War Memorial Building.

    The committee was appointed just two weeks ago. It did put off the larger issues of overall renovations of the building, but members did say the rental for the building should be increased.

    The War Memorial in Great Falls is one of the cheapest places to rent in the county, some say. Its affordability makes it attractive to even out-of-county events.

  • Old-Fashioned Christmas is planned for Nov. 29

    It is almost Thanksgiving, and Christmas is only about a month away. The Great Falls Home Town Association will hold its annual Old-Fashioned Christmas from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, to kick off the Christmas season in Great Falls.

    "We are trying to encourage the community to come out to visit local businesses and support local groups in Great Falls," said Jada Suthard, chairman of the Community Committee which organizes the Christmas event. "Come out on Thursday and enjoy an old-fashioned Christmas."

  • I'm doing my part to keep the angels working overtime

    Four months ago I wrote an editorial about the seen and unseen angels who passed my way after I underwent surgery.

    Little did I know, and I'm glad I didn't, that a few short months later, I'd be writing about some of the same angels with the addition of a few new ones.

    On Oct. 24, I underwent a second surgery. I've decided that two surgeries in such a short time is enough for me. It's not something I want to do on a quarterly basis.

  • CHAMPIONS ALREADY: Road to state goes through Great Falls ...

    The Great Falls Red Devils won the Upperstate Championship game Friday night, beating the Ridge Spring-Monetta Trojans 42-14.

    The Red Devils will play the Blackville-Hilda Hawks at noon Friday at S.C. States Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium in Orangeburg for the state Division II A title.

    Some supporters of the Red Devils are heading down with the team to Orangeburg, and fans are asked to come out to show their support as the team leaves.

  • Great Falls also trying to drum up support

    While it hasn't been designated an official "day" to support the Red Devils, Great Falls folk are being urged to support their local high school in its playoff drive.

    Flopeye.net, an Internet site based in Great Falls has been asking for all to wear black and red to the game

    The site is also offering prizes for the "best signs" at the games.

    The site also contains pictures of "Go Devils" and other supportive signs placed around town.

  • Great Falls Christmas Parade set for Sunday

    The Great Falls Christmas Parade will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18.

    It will begin in the downtown area and will end at First Citizens Bank.

    Late entries will be accepted.

    All three-wheelers, four-wheelers and motorbikes need to stay together. Do not turn around and come back down Main Street for any reason.

    Animal units must not come down Main Street prior to the parade.

  • After-school program gets grant

    Great Falls High School's Fifth Quarter program received a $35,000 grant from the Chester Healthcare Foundation Thursday night.The program is one of a number of wellness programs in the county that were given grants in the Foundation's first-ever cycle, in the Spring.

  • County Council looks at fixing up G.F. War Memorial

    Help may be on the way for the Great Falls War Memorial Building soon.

    Chester County Council appointed a committee to look at problems with the building and suggestions for fixing them up, as well as looking at rental rates intended to keep people from abusing the center.

    The War Memorial in Great Falls is one of the cheapest places to rent in the county, some say. Its affordability makes it attractive to even out-of-county events.

    The rates are substantially lower than what the War Memorial Building in Chester charges. Both are county-owned facilities.

  • Officer fired over taser gets job in Great Falls

    A longtime Chester police officer dismissed in September from the Chester City Police Department has a new job in law enforcement.

    Wanda Alexander is now working for the Great Falls Police Department, officials there confirmed Oct. 22.

    She was fired after a complaint from a jailer that she had touched him with a taser

    Alexandeer has been with the Chester Police Department, at two separate times, for more than 10 years.

    She also worked for a period at the Chester County Sheriff's Office.
