The S.C. Highway Patrol investigated a fatal collision that took place on West End Road near Grant Lake Circle Friday morning. According to Lance Cpl. Gary Miller of the S.C. Highway Patrol, the incident took place Friday morning about 8:45 a.m. one mile west of Chester. The driver of the truck was identified by the Chester County Coroner's Office as Floyd W. Sims 79, of Newberry.

The 1999 Freightliner and logging trailer loaded with logs driven by Sims was traveling east on West End Road when a tree fell into the roadway and the truck collided with the tree. The truck then went down an embankment and overturned. Sims was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Miller.

"That tree falling was just an act of God," said Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker, "the driver could not have prevented anything that happened."

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, this brings the total of traffic fatalities in Chester County to 11. This compares to seven for last year in the same time period (Jan. 1 to May 7) and a and is fast approaching the total for all of 2016 of 18 fatalities.
