  • Plenty of fall festivals to
    amuse you this weekend

    Many area churches have fall festivals and trunk or treating events planned for the upcoming weekend and Halloween. The list includes:

    • Armenia UMC: Trunk or Treat, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31. Bring cakes for the cake walk.
    • Bethel UMC: Family Fall Festival, 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. Wear Halloween costumes. Pumpkin painting, cake walk, hot dog supper and more.

  • Anointed Church of God
    Fall revival, "We Seek and Jesus Will Save," Oct. 27-30. Service Sunday begins at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Neal of Calvary Baptist. Dinner to follow. Monday through Wednesday, devotions will be at 6:30 p.m. and the service at 7 p.m. The Rev. Corey Sanders will speak Monday, the Rev. Jerome Boyd of Pine Grove Baptist will speak Tuesday and the Rev. Miller of Unity Baptist will speak Wednesday. Church is at 238 Gadsden St. Church choirs will sing. All welcome.

  • The Chester Police Department has a commander and he goes by Chief Andre` T. Williams, having been appointed by the City Council on July 8, 2011. Hailing from Walterboro, South Carolina in Colleton County, he was with that department for 13 years, the last three as a narcotics agent. Prior to that, he’d put in eight years with the South Carolina Department of Corrections as a sergeant, giving him two decades in law enforcement.

  • Chester Regional Medical Center has a new general surgeon. Dr. Todd Tanner, a former surgeon at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston, N.C., visited the Chester hospital on Friday with his wife of nine years, Sherry, and their four-year-old son, Jude. During this visit, Tanner shared what ultimately attracted him to Chester.

  • Many may recall the legendary, female sharpshooter Annie Oakley depicted the 1950s movie, “Annie Get Your Gun.” Before her death, in the late 1920s, Will Rogers, noted American cowboy and columnist, described Oakley as “the greatest woman rifle shot the world has ever produced,”but spring forward to Oct. 26, 2013 and Geneva Tyler created an enviable record to Oakley's and earned the title, “Granny Get Your Gun.”

    The Rev. Jesse Boulware will be honored during the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday. Fifty-six years ago, Sept. 15, 1957, the Rev. Boulware delivered his initial sermon at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and has been serving Chester, York and Fairfield counties since. The public is invited to attend.   • Nestled away in Lando, it was known as Walkers’ Mill during the time of the American Revolution. Later, in the 1800’s, it became as Whites’ Mill and then the Fishing Creek Manufacturing Company. It went on to be The Factory. Finally, in 1895 it was incorporated as Lando Mills and lasted one hundred years until closing its’ doors in 1991. Aside from the post office that remained inside, the building was empty and two years ago, the post office closed.
