  • She calls herself the “secretary,” the “Girl Friday” and the “administrative assistant.” Her name is Veca Torrence and she is a Chester native though now residing in Charlotte. Without her, the fire department on Columbia Street would and could not operate as efficiently as it does. As the only female at the station, she was/is the first black female to work an administrative position with the city of Chester, and after 20 years of doing so, says, “It’s part of my skin.”

  • They “all see it as a calling” –one that “becomes your life.” So are the thoughts and sentiments of Chester Fire Departments’ Shift 3, led by Captain Terry Foster, a 20-year veteran of the department. Captain Terry had been a mill worker at the Katherine Plant, when now retired fireman Carlton Carter asked him, “Why don’t you be a fireman?” Foster began taking classes and “got bit by the bug.”

  • A newly released novel by the communications director for S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson has an important scene set in Chester.
    The novel, Tell It Like Tupper, is a new novel written by J. Mark Powell. The book tells the fictional story of 'what happens when an everyday guy unknowingly becomes friends with a presidential candidate,' according to the news release from the author.
    Powell knows well the national political scene. He is a former staff member for New Hampshire Congressman Frank Guinta and a former journalist for CNN.

  • Troop 74 Boy Scout Talf Wrenn carried on small talk with fellow Scouts Sunday morning at Kershaw First Baptist Church, stopping occasionally to receive greetings and congratulations from family and friends.
    The topics were casual, mostly centering around a hard-fought win by Wrenn's beloved Clemson Tigers the day before. By all accounts, it was normal Sunday morning interaction before the start of church service – but it wasn't.
