Weekend of Champions on the move

It will look a little different and will switch locations, but the Weekend of Champions will remain intact for at least one more year.
Both AAAA state championship football games and the AAA contest will be held at Clemson later this year, just as it was in 2008 (when our hometown Chester Cyclones played Myrtle Beach). The games are typically played in Columbia at Williams Brice Stadium, but South Carolina wanted $45,000 from the South Carolina High School League. Clemson's bid was a bit less...a lot less...$45,000 less.
As I mentioned in the story "High school athletics in for a shake-up" in today's paper, the state title venue was likely to change. There were rumblings that AAAA might cut its own deal to play its two championship games in Columbia at Spring Valley High School. That would keep AAAA from having to split gate receipts with AAA.
You'll notice that the AA classification will not be represented in Clemson. Much as Class A did a few years ago, AA is planning on splitting into two divisions and moving into their own venue. My friend Jed Blackwell with Hometown News has a great story on the AA split that you can read here http://www.hometown-news.com/sports/03-21-2011/2779/2a-athletic-director...
I'm personally glad some semblance of the WOC has remained intact. The next shoe to drop will be a change in the number of teams in each classification and the possible elimination of split football champions in Class A.
