Utopia and individual liberties

-A A +A

To the Editor:
I have been teaching for over two years now and I am shocked at the level of ignorance concerning the basic principles of our Constitution.
There seems to be a collective opinion that the government is some type of other person or being that is supposed to create this utopian world where all things are equal and most importantly, the outcomes of life are the same. This should not be surprising when the president of the U.S. speaks of "fundamentally changing the country."
From my perspective, for someone who has pledged his life to defend the Constitution, the question is fundamentally change in what respect? I happen to think that the Constitution has worked rather well. Further, it is the most enlightened document ever written by man.
The idea that government can create some type of utopian society where everyone has an equal, fair shot and all live in 1,500 square feet homes can only be achieved by eliminating individual freedoms.  Further, the surrender of those freedoms to the government to achieve equality or security will only result in the oppression of the people who the government is supposed to protect.
Karl Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao and every other utopian planner all had the same goal in mind as those which emanate from the talking points of not only the president but also the Democratic Party. Such social engineering has historically not worked and only leads to tyranny. Check the history of the 75 million communist victims killed to achieve the ideal utopian state.
I fear that the nation is committing suicide. Americans are surrendering our rights in the guise of some utopian philosophy that the national government, guided by the handiwork of graduates of Yale or Harvard, has the answers to the vexing problems of the nation.
As we have seen most recently, their solutions are usually more governmental control and regulation that further stifle individual freedoms and liberties. Yet they ask for even more power to regulate, spend and fix. Their mantra is give me more power and we will reach the end of the rainbow. Beware! Only those nations that have allowed an individual to pursue his/her individual interests have weathered the verdict of history. In other words, follow the spirit of the Constitution, which is intended to limit the intrusion of government into the affairs of an individual's rights. It is upon the dreams, risks and endeavors of the individual that this nation was great and will remain great. I urge all voters to consider this when voting this fall.
