Larry Lamont Hinson, 59, of 5451 Old Winnsboro Road, Great Falls, was arrested Tuesday night by the Chester County Sheriff's Office.
Chester County Sheriff Richard Smith said four search warrants were executed simultaneously Tuesday at different properties Hinson owns or has access to. Three of the properties are in the Great Falls area and the fourth is in Albermarle, N.C., Smith said.
Smith said officers were searching for jewelry Hinson had reported as stolen.
“During the execution of the warrants, some of the reported jewelry was found,” Smith said. “Also during the search, marijuana and a sawed off rifle was found,” Smith said.
Hinson was arrested late Tuesday night at the home of Wayne Brazzell, 5152 Great Falls Highway, Great Falls. Brazzell works at Hinson's store, Little Convenience Store, at 744 Chester Ave., Great Falls. Smith said he thought Hinson had been living with Brazzell since his wife, Alfreda Wertz Hinson, was found murdered in their home at 5451 Old Winnsboro Road, Great Falls, on Nov. 28, 2011.
She died of a single gunshot wound to her head.
After the murder, Smith said robbery did not appear to be a motive in the murder because Hinson's pocketbook and some other personal items were not taken.
Days after the murder, Hinson reported some of his wife's jewelry was stolen, Smith said.
According to Smith, Hinson has been charged with simple possession of marijuana, filing a false police report, filing a false insurance claim, unlawful possession of a firearm and forgery. His bond on the combined charges has been set at $50,000.
The Hinson's home, their convenience store and a house Hinson owns in Albermarle, N.C. were searched, along with Brazzell's home.
According to search warrants obtained from the Sheriff's Office, numerous pieces of jewelry including a wedding ring set and two safes were taken as inventory from the Little Convenience Store.
At the Hinsons' home, $5,429, two unfired shotgun shells and a Rossi 38-special revolver with five unfired rounds were placed into police inventory.
Police also inventoried numerous pieces of jewelry taken from a duffel bag at Brazzell's home. In addition, police collected three plastic bags of marijuana, an Armi 6.35-caliber pistol with five bullets, an H&R 12-gauge single barrel shotgun, a Winchester pump shotgun and a double-barrel shotgun made in Czechoslovakia from Brazzell's home.
Two pieces of clothing were taken from the North Carolina home.
Smith said the three shotguns and a “sawed off” rifle were turned over to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division for analysis. Smith said the “sawed off” rifle is illegal to possess because the barrel is too short.
Smith said authorities are continuing their investigation into Mrs. Hinson's murder.
“The Chester County Sheriff's Office and SLED are working diligently to solve the murder of Alfreda Hinson,” Smith said.
Anyone with information about the homicide can call the Sheriff's Office at 385-5433 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-274-6372.
