Spring round-up: Chester soccer, softball notch wins

The Chester boys soccer team continued its playoff push on Tuesday night with a close win at Columbia.

The Cyclones downed the Capitals 2-1. Irving Ramos scored both Chester goals, including the first just 10 minutes into the contest on an assist from Jeffrey Gulish. Columbia tied the score at 1-1 just before the half and it stayed that way until the 79th minute when Ramos scored from the right side of the box off a cross from J.D. Welborn. Kenard Young turned away seven Columbia shots-on-goal.

On Wednesday, the Cyclones notched a 4-0 non-region victory over Keenan. Garrison Wyatt scored twice, while Brandon Lawson and Young each scored once for Chester. Monty Beam and Gulish both picked up assists.

Chester is now 8-6 overall and 3-4 in region play. Chester has a non-region game Monday at Andrew Jackson and wraps up the region slate Tuesday at Fairfield Central.

The Chester JV baseball team continued its outstanding season Wednesday with a 17-5 victory over Blacksburg. The varsity team lost a high-scoring game to Nation Ford 14-7 on Tuesday. The team plays at home tonight against Blacksburg.

The Chester softball team routed Westside on Monday 11-1, picked up a blowout region win Tuesday over Columbia 17-3 and split a pair of games with Nation Ford, winning an 11-10 contest and falling 13-9. The Lady Cyclones have a region contest at Fairfield Central on Tuesday.

The Chester boys golf team downed Great Falls 207-197 Wednesday. The team faced Union County and Lewisville Thursday and has a three-way match with Great Falls and Lewisville Monday at 4 p.m.

The Great Falls baseball team lost a very competitive game to McBee on Tuesday 10-6. The Red Devils will face Lamar at home tonight at 6 p.m.
