An automobile accident at the intersection of S.C. Highway 9 and J.A. Cochran Bypass on Monday caused a wide-spread power outage that lasted for more than two hours.
A car hit a utility pole near the Exxon convenience store causing electrical power to be cut to numerous households and businesses throughout the area.
“There were 1,190 Duke Energy customers without power due to this auto accident,” said Rick Jiran, the company's district manager. “The power went off at 5:34 p.m. We had all customers but one restored at 8 p.m. and that was Wendy's which was restored at midnight.”
The driver of the car involved in the accident was reportedly airlifted to a North Carolina hospital. This person's condition as well as details of the accident from the S.C. Highway Patrol were not available at press time. S.C. Highway Patrol officers directed traffic at the intersection Monday evening where the traffic signals were rendered useless.
